Is Costco Owned By Target?

Last Updated on 10/07/2019 by GS Staff

Q: Does Target own Costco?

A: No, Costco and Target are two separate publicly traded companies. Costco trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol COST. Target trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol TGT. If Target owned all or a significant portion of Costco, Costco would no longer trade as its own company. Rather, Target would acquire the shares of Costco and they would would continue to trade under the parent company TGT.

Costco is actually a much bigger company in terms of market capitalization compared to Target. As of the date of this article, Costco’s market capitalization was approximately $126.54 billion compared to Target’s $54.97 billion market capitalization. Without completing an unnecessary financial analysis of the two companies for the sake of this article, we would speculate that if ever one company were to own the other, Costco would takeover Target. Howerever, keep in mind we are not suggesting that this will ever happen.
