Is Kylie Cosmetics a Publicly Traded Company?

You cannot purchase Kylie Cosmetics stock. However, a majority stake of the business is owned by the American cosmetics company called Coty. Coty is a publicly traded company that trades under the ticker symbol COTY on the New York Stock Exchange. If you want to invest in Kylie Cosmetics, you can invest in Coty. However, an investment in COTY is an investment in much more than just Kylie Cosmetics as we will explain.

What Does Coty Own?

Coty operates under two divisions: Luxury and Consumer. Luxury produces primarily fragrances and skincare while Consumer makes cosmetics, fragrances, and body care products. Keep in mind that many familiar names are listed below. Some of these brands are owned by Coty whereas others are produced in a partnership with another company. For example, Coty does not own Calvin Klien but they produce the fragrances on behalf of the company. We indicated with an “*” the brands owned by Coty in the table below.

Coty also owns 40% of Wella Company. The company’s focus is on hair and nail products, particularly for the professional market. Some of the popular brands associated with the business are Wella Professionals*, Nioxin, OPI*, Clairol*, Sassoon Professional, and Sebastian Professional*.

Does Kylie Jenner Own Kylie Cosmetics?

Kylie Jenner sold 51% of Kylie Cosmetics to Coty for $600 million in November 2019. Jenner held on to the remaining portion of the company at the close of the deal. Forbes estimates that she brought home approximately $340 million after taxes from the partial acquisition by Coty.

Some believe that Coty overpaid for its stake in Kylie Cosmetics. A Forbes article titled Inside Kylie Jenner’s Web of Lies is a good read if you want to dig into the juicy details of the reported financial shenanigans involving Kylie Jenner and her net worth/business financials. The Coty and Kylie Cosmetics deal is certainly something you will want to understand in-depth if you are considering researching COTY for a potential investment.

Final Thoughts

Kylie Cosmetics does not have its own stock since it is owned by Coty. You can consider investing in the publicly traded Coty (NYSE: COTY), but the company is much more complex than just the Kylie brand. As we outlined above, Coty has many brands under its wing that in total produce over $4 billion in revenue per year. In other words, the business is much more complex than most people can imagine without knowing much about Coty. Be sure to complete your own due diligence and/or seek professional guidance before investing in Coty.
