Q: Does Kroger take American Express as a payment method?
Yes, Kroger accepts all major credit cards including American Express, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.
Be aware that Kroger has not been shy about removing credit cards from being accepted as a payment method at certain subsidiaries. For example, the Kroger subsidiary, Smith’s Food and Drug, stopped accepting Visa credit cards in April 2019 because of interchange fees that Kroger believed were excessive.
While the Visa ban has since been reversed at Smith’s, this does not mean that it can’t happen again with Visa or other credit cards such as American Express. They could even take on a Costco model where they work out a favorable deal with only one credit card company and only accept that company’s credit card for payment in lieu of others.
However, you should expect Kroger to accept all major credit cards, including American Express, for the foreseeable future. We will update this article if we hear of any changes regarding Kroger and American Express.
