The first digit of a credit card is known as the Major Industry Identifier. You are able to tell the issuer of the credit card by this number. Since the credit card in question starts with a 5, this indicates that it is a MasterCard.
You can find out additional information by looking at the first six digits of the credit card. These digits are known as the Issuer Identification Number and will tell you the financial institution that issued the card (i.e. Bank of American or Chase).
