A grace period buys you time to fully pay your credit card balance to avoid interest. The U.S. Credit Card Act of 2009 requires credit card companies to offer a grace period of at least 21 days if they offer a grace period. Since most credit card companies offer a grace period, you will commonly have a minimum of 21 days from the end of the billing cycle to pay your credit card before interest is charged.
The table below reflects the American Express grace period for their various credit cards. You will see that they offers at least a 25 day grace period for their cards that allow you to carry a balance. Some American Express cards require you to pay the entire balance each month so a grace period is not a factor for these cards.
Keep in mind that the grace period does not apply for cash advances and balance transfers. You start paying interest the day they occur for these types of transactions.
